State Institute for Drug Control is a national competent authority operating in the field of human pharmacy and drug precursors. Its various responsibilities include, for instance, ensuring activities associated with marketing authorization of medical products, registration and notification of manufactures and medical devices, controlling and evaluating the process of assessing the quality, efficacy and safety of drugs, and many more. SIDC also cooperates with foreign institutions within the European Medicines Agency, Heads of Medicines Agency, European Commission, Council of Europe, World Health Organization and Pharmaceutical Inspection Convention and Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme.

The headquarters of SIDC are located in Bratislava, the capital of Slovak Republic. Moreover, SIDC has some control laboratories in other parts of the country. State Institute for Drug Control has 179 internal employees.

The area of monitoring veterinary medicinal products in the Slovak Republic is under the authority of the Institute for State Control of Veterinary Biologicals and Medicaments located in the city of Nitra.
